Ink Application For Finish Foils Decorative Paper

Ink is a homogeneous mixture of substances such as chromosomes ( pigments, dyes, etc. ), connection materials, fillers and other substances. It can be printed and dried on the printed body. It has colors and it is a certain degree of fluidity of the slurry adhesive. Therefore, the color, body (thin, fluidity and other rheological properties) and drying performance is the three most important performance of the ink.

With the development of printing technology, the varieties of ink continue to increasing, there are many ways to classify. The  classification by printing methods can be summarized as following five categories:

Letterpress printing ink: black ink for books, rotating black ink, color relief printing ink;

Lithographic printing ink: offset printing light resin ink, offset rotary ink;

Gravure printing ink: gravure photography ink, carved gravure inks, etc;

Hole printing ink: transcribing version of ink, screen printing ink;

Special printing ink: foam ink, magnetic ink, fluorescent ink, conductive ink.

Because our finish foil and decorative printed paper maily use  gravure printing, so we focus on gravure printing ink.

The nature of gravure printing ink:

It is different from letterpress printing ink for its small stickiness.

(1), the ink is easy to fill in the concave image.

(2), when wiping the layout, the non-graphic part of the ink to be easy to wipe.

(3), when printing, the ink into the picture should be easily transferred to the printed substrate.

(4), after printing, the ink on the printed matter to keep the picture clear and can quickly dry.

(5), when floding the printed matter, it is not easy to breake up or fall off.

In view of gravure printing ink with the above properties, the design of ink should consider the following factors:

(1), liquidity:

To make the ink has a good mobility, it requires the pigment content in the ink can not be too low. The better the material infiltrates the pigment, the smaller the thixotropy. If the thixotropy is too large, it will lead to first link flow is not good, poor ink transmission and so on.

(2), viscosity:

Viscosity is closely related to the mobility, the viscosity of the situation determines the transfer rate of ink. If the viscosity is too small, it will appear pinhole, not flat and so on. If the viscosity is too large, it will appear scratches, bite color, paste plate and so on.

Usually the supply viscosity is 50-60 / sec, while the printing viscosity will be 25-30 / sec, or even 40-50 / sec are possible, which is related to the speed.

(3), dryness: gravure printing ink belongs to volatile dry type:

A, due to high gravure printing speed, 100-150m / min.

B, the thickness of ink film is 9-20 / micron. Therefore, it is impossible to absorb and oxidize the conjunctiva by the substrate, so that the drying speed of the ink film can be achieved by adjusting the ratio of quick-drying and slow-drying solvent in the solvent to achieve the appropriate drying speed. Drying speed is also related to printing speed, printing environment, temperature and humidity

(4), printability

mainly refers to the flow of ink transfer, scraper angle and the size of the pressure adjustment, it can make the printed matter has a good printing effect.

(5), safety and toxicity

no toluene and water-based ink is low toxicity safe.

 

At present, our  Finish foils  paper is mainly using solvent-based ink, decorative paper is mainly using water-based ink.

Solvent-based inks

Ordinary solvent inks typically contain aromatic hydrocarbon solvents (toluene, xylene). Some international ink companies first introduced non-aromatic hydrocarbon solvent ink in the Chinese market, alcohol, ester, ether, ketone, gasoline as solvent, eliminating the harm the aromatic hydrocarbon solvent may cause. The solvent-based inks used for printing are essentially non-aromatic hydrocarbons, but there are still a lot of volatile organic solvents that affect the air quality of the printing shop. Residual odor in the printed matter has been very little, may be in the composite print there will be a small amount of odor exists, but in the basic printed matter it can not be found.

Water-based ink

Water-based ink steps further in environmental performance when compared to solvent-based ink. Not only it does not contain aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, the VOC is also greatly reduced. However, its hard to have none VOC content, it still contains a small amount of alcohol, ether and even organic amines. It has less impact on the environment, mainly polluting the workshop air.

Ink used for impregnated wood grain printing is generally required to meet environmental requirements and have a higher price. It requires bright color in ink , good performance in colors, delicate and clear print outlets, strong sense of hierarchy, good texture, less white spot. The printability of ink  is good, which means it can maintain long time  consistent color printing. It does not occur mixed color, exclusion phenomenon. Instead of the environmental issues, decorative paper printing ink has the most important two indicators: anti-ultraviolet level and thermal stability. This is the unique requirement for decorative paper products. So impregnated decorative paper printing are now using water-based ink. At present, in addition to some manufactures of the higher quality requirements are using imported products, generally manufactures have been using domestic water-based ink printing. High-quality ink market is still occupied by the German Hartmann ink. In recent years, China has also emerged in many manufacturers of decorative paper with water-based ink, such as Letong, Great world, Haitian, Wantong, Huatong, Delin and so on.
